Whoa! I hate the teacher is perfectionst! she/he have no right to tell you

My bad expereinced with all hearing teacher about Total Communications. I grew up from Oregon which I hate total Communications is really confused me. ASL is our deaf's culture. They should let to learn our ASL.

I never forgot when I argued with my husband's friend about Cereal "C" as new similiar .. but I use grain and grain cutter as old ASL who signed in 1920's.. not our culture? I said old deaf culture than new deaf culture.. Dont mixed up with total communcations. I hate it.
I prefer old and deaf cultre. not S.E.E. or Pidget Sign English. Whatever you came from one of parents. you learn from two parent. Dont screw up with confusion with S.E.E or PSE. be kindly nice to respected all of deaf need to learn to be knit in deaf community in anywhere.

Hey there, you are not the one. I was there same thing, even all over the world Deaf School same. We about 99% of Deaf population face same problem we went through. It hardship and confuse for everyone of us. You dad was RIGHT. Your former teacher was WRONG. We need to remember during that time, all teacher don't know better, they just learn what other said. We need to do something about it. Thanks for sharing this.

Wow!!! That teacher was very wrong because that teacher was not very well bilingualism that. That teacher had no right to say to you when you were a child and never said bad thing about your father's way of communication in ASL! Total Communication confused you!!! Teacher suppresed your feeling in very wrong way! IN my school, Md School for the Deaf, Supt Dr Denton who was a father of Total Communication and caused a lot of clash. Many of us felt ambivalence terrible! For your information, whenever teacher say bad thing about your language to your child. Keep eye on that child. You express very well clear in that vlog!!!

No question that your teacher was very wrong. It never ceases to amaze me how arrogant and patronizing hearing people are in telling deaf people what to do. It's not the teacher's position to criticize the communication methods of the student's parents!

I wonder did your dad stand up to that teacher? "I am right", no wrong! or just that he already knew, walked away? We, DEAF and ASLAN knew your dad was 100% right.

Oh my goodness! I could vividly remember a graduate school professor at Gallaudet yelling at the students for allowing the students use ASL during their internship. Denying ASL was, and still is, in vogue. What your teacher did to you could be considered as a form of verbal abuse. Very disrespectful of not only your father, but also you!

Thank you for share your comments about my experience. As Platonic's eye, we need to keep watch for deaf children to make sure they didn't learn from their teacher that ASL is wrong.

mochame, when I was kid, I thought that teacher will always be right, but now, I know teacher does make mistake. However, I never told my dad until when I get older. My dad was shocked, but he let it go and told me to be happy as we still use ASL. My teacher did once told me that she have hard time to understand my dad because he use ASL. She prefers to have my mom at meeting instead of my dad. When I was kid, I didn’t understand what is discriminate, but now, that is discriminating statement and it still passing to this day.

OH my,my! There are so many ignorant views by certain individuals who don't understand the value of bilingualism. Too often that students were forced to use English but never were taught in ASL about the rules of English (why and how it is that way in English). I believe this is an epidemic causing many DEAF people leaving school with a lack of understanding about the English rules because they never really understood them in the first place.

Even I had worked with students who were emphasized to use Manually Coded English, they did not end up writing well. Those who use ASL especially from Deaf families who have great understanding in English are the ones who excel in literacy.

Unfortunately, this so-called approach is a misconception that signing in English word order means it will enable your English skills.

Total Communications: Always seek for perfection sentence for everyone.

I was using Total Communications when I was young and mainstream school and then transfered to Deaf School. I've learned ASL and already fall in love ASL quite much better understand communication faster short talk. Not that reason ASL cause problems with English grammar. That what Teacher determined ASL is wrong! *Yeah right* I ignored all along!

Your teacher was sooooo wrong to say that to you! Imagine a teacher saying "You are wrong to be Lutheran == you should be Baptist" of something like that. Its the same principle.

Obviously your ASL was the right choice -- you write just fine in English, but your ASL is beautiful! If my child was told "what your father teaches you about math is WRONG" I would be in that teacher's face and report her to the School Board. Remember Albert Einstein -- he flunked math in grade school, because he was so far ahead of the teacher, he was totally bored in learning multiplication and division rules -- he preferred to dream about calculus and advanced physics! His math teacher couldn't even spell "calculus"... Einstein loved to show his old report card from grade school later in life! I bet that teacher was embarrassed to have his name on Einstein's "F"

Shame on your teacher for abusing your holding your bladder for too long time by using the TC. ASL is far more good healthier by not holding our bladders that long! ASL is more faster and shorter! Your teacher should be fired for not being so friendly to some of our ASL!

Asl Risen: Yes, I remember see some teachers force kids to do right phrase with English and Sign before do something included lunch, going out for recesses, activities, etc. Our next generation don't need to go through those experience that we did through. I hope we can do about it.

ASLPRIDE,

I am not surprised. Same thing. I was transferred to a mainstream program from a deaf residental school, mine is strong ASL. My teacher critized me A LOT, had been a big headache with my ASL. PLUS she misunderstand me a lot.
For your case, teacher should not say that for your dad's ASL was wrong, she should know the different language between ASL & English in a communication methods.
She should respect your dad's language period. She should say all thing is do you have to follow her rule to use an English during school time, then after school, you go home, then you can use ASL at home. That is simple.
