I think the same may apply to hearing kids too. If they weren't instructed properly, they would make the same mistake, except they would just find out that much sooner than you did... with all the yelling going on LOL.
It's a good thing the leader didn't bawl you out for doing that! It doesn't have to do with your deafness, but the leaders' lack of foresight in explaining the safety rules.
Unfortunately, some idiots may view it as deaf being dumb, if they didn't take into account all the factors in a situation.
I'm sure most deaf adults have stories similar to yours from their childhood. I sure have!
Hi, I agree with Shel's comment. Maybe a scout master (hearing) thought you have no fear of those arrows when you went and pick up same time other arrows were released.
I really do agree with you there. I wore a hearing aid and had a lot of experiences of what happened during my childhood. Even I could not fully hear what the instructors say about following the procedures. Just make it looks like you understood fully, but not true. There are a lot of words that were unfamiliar during that young age. They need to explain it basic words instead of fancy words that makes them look smarter.
Sometimes hearing look at kids who wear hearing aid or Deaf as dumb or not fully pay attention. Yes, we do fully pay attention but they left out a lot that are very risk.
As I grew older and became an Interpreter for the Deaf in Elementary School. There are 6th grade Deaf students who go out in P.E. or any type of activities. I went in there to interpret for them and noticed all Hearing kids were shocked that these Deaf kids have capabilities like them. That's when I looked back to my childhood and wished my mom would allow me to have Interpreter, but that's a long story.
I'm glad you brought that up and it is true that all Hearing need to be informed about Deaf people's capabilities. Only if they have an Interpreter to do just that, but not a signer. Please, no signer as any person who do this will not fully explain anything at all like Interpreter can. That's the reason why all Hearing need to be aware the difference between signer and Interpreter. So everything will go smoothly as the Deaf people can be fully instructed.
Support and use ASL!
