Fascinating!

Yes, I agree there is tragic times when hearies assume that just because we are deaf, we can not think out, philosophize, analyze, etc etc. I remember before I became aware of how hearies oppress us Deafies, the hearies used to call me smart and 'pat my back' etc. I used to pride in that but now my attitude changed since I join this online community of Deaf because I felt that finally I found the community that can truly understand me. Now this recent semester, my Latin America Culture etc class professor called me smart and very brilliant, etc., I just thanked her and walked away because she simply is no longer in my visualized list of people who I want to compliment. Only people who I really want to encourage me on are Deafies and hearies who are STRONGLY involved in Deaf community, that is it. Yeah I think I understand where you are coming from :).

Hi ASLpride,

YOur discussion is excellent.

Deaf people who think Hearing people are always right rather than Deaf people. They are Aristotle followers. Aristotle stated that Deaf people cannot talk therefore they cannot think.

There are many Aristotles and their deaf followers around here.

Hello,

I had to delete because I realized that I was not making myself it clear.

I agreed that there are some Deaf people who think hearing people are better than Deaf people. It is sad to see that the system would manipulate Deaf people to think that hearing people are better than Deaf people. They would think that Deaf people would become smarter if they are hearing people. Oh Pluz..

I NEVER was/am/will be a hearing person’s follower/puppet. My hearing teachers hated my guts. I refused to use my voice. I was punished severely because I chose to continue to stick with my belief in using ASL.

One of my friends who were an oralist asked me not to use ASL in public and to act like a hearing person. I told her off and continued to ASL in public. That’s when she broke her fear and realized that using ASL is nothing to be shame of. Now she is one of us as vloggers.

I had to survive in mainstream high school because these students would insult and sometimes beat me up because I am strong DEAF and ASL user. Just because they adopted the attitude from hearing teachers and these Deaf students thought that hearing teachers are right. My teachers/interpreters hated me to death because I refused allow myself to be lower standard than they were.

However, other people and I had bad experiences with some DOD who were having attitudes toward us as DOH, not because of DOD, it is because they were A**holes.

In closure, after I read Deafhood book and talked to wonderful leaders and people. I realized it was not worth time to invest to label every group. We are here to unify. We are under a group who has similar experience with the system who divide and cripple us in Deaf community. It is important every one with diverse background is a part of Deaf/Deafhood group.

Good discussion anyway. :o)

And I call this SYSTEM that have been controlling our lives. For example, myself as a DOD, have been told many times that those mainstreamed students are no good.
I wish this never happened because we now know Deaf people of any kind are probably the brightest people in the world.

Excellent anaylsis and you really made me to think further and I look forward learning more from others.

You raised something that I felt needed to be addressed for so long. Many service organizations are run by hearings and more often than not they do not value deaf's input in how the organization should be run. Many do not hire deaf. I'm talking about organizations such as, for example, St. Louis Hearing Society that provides equipment like tty or any services. Or...say for example Illinois commission on Deaf and Hard of Hearing, etc. I'm just throwing examples here. I'm not specifically targeting anything. Many similar organizations are run and/or controlled by hearings. This has got to change. Too many passive deaf in areas such as the midwest, perhaps the south as well) Too many deaf have let the hearings tell them what to do for so long.

I have encountered many DOD people and like Aidan said, they were a**hole toward to me because I wasn't "deaf" enough for them. That is one of few reasons why I chose to not socialize with deaf people.

Interesting discussion that you have. About the phrase, "You don't know" I never heard that phrase from any of my hearing peers while I was growing up and still don't hear that today.

Hello Jarom,

I didn't mean hearing people telling us that we don't know. The phase "You don't know" come from deaf person to another deaf person that didn't socialize with deaf people.

I am glad that you saw it. I analyzed two years ago and coined a term, "audist's deaf protégè. I asked Dr. Harlan Lane if my term
was correct. He said yes, it was
correct, so ever since then I have
identified some people as ADP.

ADP are in chains, sad.

Jarom: Hi... I hope you will come back and work with us in Deaf community. It is important for us to stay strong and not let the system to divide us and to allow us to do "Deaf against Deaf." I also met many wonderful DODs. We shouldn't generalize them to other DODs. :o)

Okay, those of you who know me are aware of two things. I can't quite get the vlogs yet, and I often say what I mean weirdly, so bear with me. I see a lot of great stuff here. Deaf people should begin to control Deaf programs and organizations. Deaf people should stop labeling themselves and come together in pride. This is great stuff. I think eventually it would be nice if all people could stop seeing the labels first, and just see the people under them. And I think the reason SOME hearing people think Deaf folks are not as smart is because those hearing cannot communicate with you. Their loss.

PS - Wow! I think that one came out alright!

Hi, ASLPride,

Thanks for sharing your view on this. It is an interesting perspective on the relationshiops between DoD and DoH... Joey mentioned he was told that the mainstreamed deafies are no good. It is a perfect example that I had experienced from the deaf commmunity, sorry Joey, did not meant to include your name, but you are speaking for the majority, ok? You are cool guy!! You, too, ASLPride! Anyway, I have gained several DoD friends over the years..that is for sure. For those hard core DOD, I give up on them, lol...

Deafhood is the key for us to understand ourselves more neuturally. You see, when those DoHs come into DoDs lives, they know nothing but what they have learned from their backgrounds. That is calling gap. The bridge needs to be built, but what?

Now, like Aidan said, at her school, she was having hard time being deaf with the other deafies as "audist's deaf protégè." I was like her more or less. I ended up attending deaf school, as a result of giving my parents an ultimate chose, I go to deaf school or I drop out.

anyway, when I entered the deaf school in my junior year, I was not welcomed. I was new, and stranger to them. I had learned the deaf world there on my own. Should there be any better approach to me as a newly departing deafie from the hearing world, I do not know. So much for my deafhood, smile...

Okay, I better leave this alone for now. Guess what, I learned a few things here, smile.

I was once attacked by a group of angry DoD when I tried to tell them dualism was the love child of Rene Descartes and St. Augustine. Obviously they wanted none of my hearing BS. BTW I'm a Doh.

Well, I see your point. I myself am DOH. I never thought of that attitdude toward DOD. There are two kind of DOD which I mean depend on Education. I grew up in ethnic community. I had neighbors- Italian Deaf family. Where I was exposed by them while I was an oral student in my youth. I already know ASL but of courses, Italian Deaf family influenced and until I enrolled school for the Deaf where there were a large number of DOD and in my classmates were 9 DOD students out of 13.
In fact most of DOD grew up in very isolated compare to DOH, of course DOH had teneded to accept the way Hearing family or people treated DOH differently, the way of thinking and valving are much different while DOD do not think that way. They tend to keep tight knit together. DOD have their own values. I myself am real dualism in many ways at the sametime I still respect DOD way of living differently. Most of the DOH often do not understand anything just accept the way Hearing do to them. That is big challenge questions. I often have very good term with DOD, it is hard to say for some DOH accept DOD in many ways depend on where they went to school Resident school often expose DOH compare to mainstream school is much less exposure but more DOH are influenced by hearing environment much differently from Resident school where I saw two different experiences being with! I have very good friend DOD who helped me a lot in many ways! There are two different kind of DOD.
