Heh! Hearing people are always fascinated by the little ways deaf people adapt to the environment. I always know when the air conditioning comes on because the lights would flicker slightly! The menu vibrates when the waitperson is speaking. It goes on and on.
Deaf people are also sensitive to changes in the air. If a door is opened, the curtains move slightly. If someone comes into a room, the air shifts from the displacement this person causes in the air, and sometimes one can literally feel the air move, curtains or no curtains.
I have only been accused of being hearing by deaf people, especially in the early days when I was learning ASL, even though I had been signing all my life. They thought I "acted," and even dressed, hearing! (That was in the late '80s.) Eventually, deaf people began to ask if I went to a deaf school. :)
Then there is the hearing person who would test my hearing, or lack of, by yelling into my ear! Duh, I will hear the loudest yells one foot away from my ears, which is what one can hear with approximately an 90 db hearing loss in each ear.
Yes. Happened to me once. My friend asked me if I could hear the knock at the door (another friend was coming over and I didn't have a door light back then). I didn't hear it, but i saw my cat's head turn toward the door so I assumed I would get up and check if our other friend arrived. Animals can be helpful environmental alerts too.
Hi again. I was just reading the comments and vlog responses. This was really a good topic to bring up. It's fascinating to see all the different ways deaf people adapt. Our other senses take over. I would love to see more comments and b/vlogs on this topic.
Funny. My TV has no power light indicator so I found system to know it's turning on (it takes a while to turn itself on). Wife said how did I know turn on TV? I said I depend on light from other lamp and it flicks when I press TV on. Can hear? No. Can see light from power surge like urs ha.
Laptop computer beeps repeatedly when turning on without a memory board in it. As an electronic repair technican, I shut it down right away when I felt the vibration without my hearing aid on, I found the missing memory board on my workbench and installed it into the laptop. Some co-workers said they were confused with how I knew it was missing. I told them I felt the vibration and the screen was blank when turning it on. They said "oh". I loved watching the expression on their faces. Its fun.
Hello Yes same happen to me when mircowave is finish then flick power ... when i use computer i notice the monitor is flick flick i know i got messge on blackberry nearby computer desk. for dishwasher is complete the power flick too> I know Deaf have more than 5 senses. indeed \0/
Hello! Yeah..happened to me..quite so often, though. my favorite memory was when i had a hearing friend over. I could always tell when my mom gets home..especially when i am upstairs. I could feel the door shut from downstairs..the door is right under my room so i could always feel it. It's hard to explain..my hearing friend could always say "sometimes i suspect you are pretending to be deaf" =) .. other times, also..have you ever experienced your insticts where you have to look behind you and there was actually a person yelling your name?? happens to me all the time. weird, eh.

During working at deaf center one time, I was accused that I could hear silent noise or very very high fluequent something. The hearing co workers claimed that they noticed my pattern to response to those noise... They even give me article about that. I still have no idea, BUT one thing I could notice is I tend to wake up before the flashing comes out. The clock was ringing just before flashing comes out. Interesting? Do not ask me, because I am so poor with that anyhow, and I could not identify anything with that as of now!
to SeekGeo: I think Jon's sign for milkshake is fine as it is. It is not in the proximity of his crotch where the meaning of "milkshake" sign changes.
In Reply to ASLPride: at my old home, the light does dim down whenever the clothes washer/dryer is on-- and likewise, when it goes off, the light goes brighter. At my new home, I know somebody is coming due to the raised wooden floor so my mother-in-law was surprised that I could "hear" her walking up behind me. Ha! I think the most hilarious moment where somebody thought I can hear is when I was in my math class (eighth grade), and I was sitting ALL WAY UP FRONT (typically seat for Deaf mainstreamed students) and my good friend was in the last row of the class. She tried to get my attention so she tried to flap her arms and I just *so happened* to see her arms flapping around in corner of my eyes so I looked around. She gasped and said: "You heard me??"... I signed back: "no, I saw you." She protested: "impossible. I am ALL way over here. YOU HEARD ME FLAPPING!" I rolled my eyes and asked if she got something to say. She forgot. Oy vey, so I turned around back to my desk-- but she kept flapping her arms over and over (and me being stupid,I kept turning around) but not long before the teacher asked her "What the heck are you doing? Being a bird?"
LaRonda, so true about using animals as monitors. I can't believe I forgot that!
I still can't make up my mind if I like wooden floors. Sometimes they can be a real annoyance, especially when I am sleeping. Sometimes they can be so useful, though.
It is too bad our power-saving efforts will harm your ability to 'hear' the microwaves. CF bulbs are pretty steady in light emission. Also, newer homes separate the circuit from the appliance outlets with the light circuits, usually putting GFCI switches on the former circuit.
Damn them hearing folks for ruining our abilities to hear! :-)
ur exprience same thing happened to me too! but the worst i shocked my grandparents THOUGHT i can heard from horn honk
anyway when i was so young boy about 10's years old i had to stay with my grandparents till my parents come picked me up. one night happened i lay down on the bed have right beside me window i was lay down and my head lay down way back up and look at window as i looked at moon and i sat up and tell grandpa look! he said U HEARD?! i told him what? i tried tell him look at moon but i turn look at window again and my parents right there! oh my gosh! it's just HAPPENED! my grandpa told grandma and my parents about it i told them nope i did not heard! i just look at moon it's happened! but it's great momery for me get exprience happened just feel right time whenever it's happened when it's ready or arrive or whatever is it.
Yes, i agree with this in which i accuse my friend of hearing. But its so perfect. Some hearing people call her name and she turns instanly, of course she is deaf.
Support and use ASL!

Absolutely! I step up to the elevator doors at work right before the doors open. It always amazes my hearing coworkers.
It's because I feel the puff of air of the coming elevator that comes through the crack at the top of the doors.
Don't tell them. It keeps them interested and guessing how you do it.

Your story was cute.

I want to thank you for sharing your experience. It is fun to hear different story relate to accusing us for being able to hear, but it wasn't. :)
